Company Profile
Further Triennial
Company Overview
Further Triennial will bring together the region’s nonprofit arts institutions and cultural centers for a season of original exhibitions and public programs, highlighting Northern California’s rich cultural history and arts ecosystem. The inaugural event will take place from March through June of 2027.
Further Triennial will span the Bay Area and beyond: south to San Jose, east to Sacramento, and north to Marin and Sonoma Counties, with many partner organizations in Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco. Each participating organization will present an exhibition that explores the region’s creative and cultural life, with an emphasis on the untold and the offbeat. Exhibitions will variously spotlight contemporary artists, explore resonant themes and social issues, and revisit the region’s artistic past through the excavation of lost histories and new perspectives on its iconic artists.
Company History
The Triennial’s name pays quiet tribute to the bus that San Francisco’s Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters drove across the United States, spreading the spirit of the counterculture. It also exemplifies a broader attitude among artists in the region, nurtured by quiet visionaries and unruly activists alike. Northern California has long welcomed outliers, outsiders, and unorthodox creativity. For those who may not have felt they belonged elsewhere, it remains a place where freedom of expression and identity seeks new and unlikely horizons. Whether through metaphysical growth, political transformation, artistic innovation, or self-creation, artists in California have pushed further out, towards the unknown and unrealized.
